The event was started back in 2009 as a way for any artist to showcase their talents in the hope that the art would "carry the ideas of it's creator and transform the perceptions of it's audience". Anyone with property in downtown Grand Rapids could turn their space into a venue and any visitor could vote for their favorite artworks. Public vote ultimately determines final ranking and who wins the cash prizes. Since the event was started, nearly $1.5 million has been awarded to the winners.
